We showed you the Lenovo Lephone Android smartphone during CES 2010 and the handset is definitely worth looking into some more. Initially thought to be a China-only affair, the smartphone will go to other markets too.

Lenovo confirmed the fact that the Lephone is on track for China. Although Google has decided to postpone Android handsets for China as a response to earlier hackers attacks that targeted the company, Android phone manufacturers can’t afford to wait for Google.

The Lenovo Lephone is definitely a great phone and Lenovo will surely not want to miss out on any sales. The company will keep its own schedule and in case you live in China you should see the Lephone arrive this May just as initially expected.

He Zhiqiang, Lenovo’s CTO told The Wall Street Journal that”

Lephone uses the Android operating system but we tailor our phones with our own applications. We are cooperating with other major Chinese Internet service providers including Sina, Sohu and Tencent.

And it’s not just Lenovo that’s going to maintain Android launch schedules for China. Motorola, one of the hottest Android handset makers so far, is also going to launch Android smartphones in China with or without Google’s support. Sure these phones will lack all the Google services customers want but that’s not going to stop them to buy the upcoming devices.

What’s more interesting about this Lephone smartphone is that Lenovo plans to launch it in other markets later this year. That means the Lephone is not China bound and we could see it in the U.S. and Europe later this year. We have no clear launch dates for these new markets but if everything goes well, we can expect a late summer release.
